
Base-wide electrical modernisation across a live airbase.
Aviano Airbase in Italy required extensive electrical system upgrades to enhance operational efficiency and safety standards across a range of facilities. The programme took in modernised lighting, power distribution and lightning protection systems, together with the installation of a 100 kW photovoltaic array, all to comply with NFPA 780 and CEI EN 62305 standards.
Rather than a single building, the scheme spanned the working infrastructure of an operational base - from a police station extension and a missile maintenance facility to medical and dental clinics and an education centre - each with its own requirements but all demanding the same precise electrical planning and strict adherence to military and safety standards.
Precise electrical planning across diverse facilities.
At the Police Station extension, a comprehensive lighting and lightning protection system was implemented alongside new distribution panels, establishing a secure and functional infrastructure. The Missile Maintenance Facility received a catenary lightning protection system to safeguard critical equipment and ensure compliance with safety protocols. The photovoltaic array was installed on a key facility's roof, complete with a revised electrical scheme and rooftop lightning protection, aligning with existing systems to meet the base's sustainability goals.
Facility restorations in the Medical and Dental Clinics introduced upgraded lighting, power supply and communication networks, while the Educational Centre gained new lighting, power distribution and communication systems, all protected by a meshed lightning protection system and grounding network. Together these upgrades exemplified precise electrical planning and strict adherence to military and safety standards.
One coherent standard across many different buildings.
The breadth of the programme was its defining feature. A missile maintenance facility, a medical clinic and an education centre have little in common as buildings, yet each had to be brought up to the same exacting military and safety standards, and each lightning protection solution - catenary, rooftop, meshed - had to suit the structure it served while satisfying both NFPA 780 and the Italian CEI EN 62305 code.
Delivering that consistency across an operational base, while adding renewable generation through the 100 kW photovoltaic array and integrating it cleanly with existing electrical infrastructure, optimised the base's resilience, energy efficiency and operational capability - the mark of electrical engineering planned facility by facility but governed by a single, coherent standard.
